Triumph and Heartbreak

The TAFE NSW Polecats 1st Division side have climbed back to the top of the NSW Tertiary League Rugby league competition mountain, after an unbelievable comeback against the UTS Tigers to claim their 17th title at New Era Stadium. While 1st Division celebrated it was again heart break for 2nd Division who lost narrowly to UTS in a nail biting match.


1st Division after letting UTS score twice and lead the majority of the half finally got on the board with 2 minutes remaining in the half, when Shane Rowe scored to help close the gap back to 6 points to 10.


After the break, UTS scored in the 39th minute to extend their lead back to 10 points, the Polecats crossed for their first try of the 2nd half when Chad Doering scored in 47th minute to help narrow the gap to 6. The Polecats continued to claw back and with 18 minutes left when Richie Mante crossed out wide to get the Polecats back with in 2, Shane Rowe got a lucky bounce after a Taylor Bennett kick to give the Polecats the lead for the first time of the match. With 4 minutes left the Polecats man of the match Luke Rye chipped the ball to help set up Shane Miller and when he converted his own try the Polecats went on to claim their 17th title winning 24 points to 16.


2nd Division after scoring first through Jamie O’Leary, the Polecats then let UTS score 16 unanswered points to lead in to the break 16 points to 6. In the 2nd half Joe Ngawini, Brandon Webb and Joseph William Joseph all crossed the line but were only able to get within 6 points of UTS who scored twice in the half to take the match and the premiership 28 points to 22.


The Polecats also claimed several other awards on the day with Billy Butler, claiming 1st Division Player of the Year, Michael Beggs taking out the 2nd Division Player of the year and Ryan Bowen wining most points scorer in 2nd Division, along with the club taking out the NSWTSRL Club Champion.


The Polecats now have a reunion at Rose Hill Gardens on the 23rd of September followed by their Presentation Night at the Castle Hill Tavern on Friday the 10th of November.
